Notes:
Overview

The course is designed to provide you with a working understanding of structured project management as presented in PRINCE2, to a level where you can use it to manage a project and pass the APMG PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner examinations. If you have already passed your Foundation examination we accommodate that within the course design.

You will be provided with a copy of the PRINCE2 manual, along with our pre-course study materials (the Mastery Pack) in advance of the course. You should plan to do up to eight hours of study on those materials prior to attending the course. If you have knowledge and experience of PRINCE2 this time may be lessened for you.

The course covers the full syllabus of the PRINCE2 Practitioner examination and the examination is taken at the end of the course. We are well known for our success in balancing exam success against the need for skills-transfer during the course.

Who will benefit?

If you require training in structured project management, and particularly PRINCE2 to Practitioner level, this is the course for you. You might be managing a project, or preparing to do so, or managing those who are PRINCE2 Practitioners.

Alternatively you may be required to play a role in a project conducted in accordance with PRINCE2 and wish to do so fully and responsibly.

Course Objectives:

On completion of the course, you will be able to:
  • Explain how the PRINCE2 process model fits together
  • Explain the context and main function of each process
  • Explain the main ideas underlying each component
  • Explain the uses of each component
  • Use the techniques described in PRINCE2
You will be encouraged and assisted to recognise, understand and adopt the proven good project management practice embodied in PRINCE2.

A major ingredient of the course is enabling you to understand PRINCE2 in order to take, and hopefully pass, your Practitioner examination. However, we will also help you to see how you can deploy PRINCE2 in your project for its benefit.

Duration

This is a five day, non-residential course. It is provided across three weeks to enable you to properly digest and understand PRINCE2 using a unique combination of distance learning and classroom training before you sit your Foundation and Practitioner examinations. This approach also minimises disruption to your day-to-day activities.

Pre-requisites

If you do not already have experience of managing a project, and/or of PRINCE2, you should consider attending an Overview course or, preferably, one of our Foundation courses.

Whatever your background and experience, you should spend up to eight hours studying the pre-course materials we supply. There will be a mock Foundation exam on the first day to enable both you and your trainer to understand where you might be having problems and to decide how that can be remedied.

If you have already passed your Foundation examination you might like to consider the fast-track approach to Practitioner status using the Foundation to Practitioner Upgrade Course.

Course Style

The course blends formal presentation with practical exercises. Our trainers are renowned for their individual experience, which enables them to illustrate and put into context the material you will be covering. Of the practical exercises, some are carried out in syndicate, where you will benefit from the experience and views of other delegates. Other exercises are undertaken individually, preparing you for the examination. Ample time is provided for discussion and clarification of anything you find difficult.

The main part of the course is a 3-day classroom event. The course is non-residential, but evening work is mandatory. Your trainer will assess your evening work on each day following.

After the classroom part of the course comes a study break of about a week. During this time you will be expected to undertake distance learning using materials we provide. About a week after the end of the first classroom event, an Examination Preparation Day takes place. This begins with the Foundation Examination (in which you should by now be in a position to score at least 80%), with the rest of the day dedicated to examination technique and focussed preparation. This is followed by a second study break of a further week and then the Practitioner Examination Day. On the latter, the morning is spent in final preparation with the exam after lunch.

This format has proven to deliver a pass rate (in he Practitioner examination) consistently higher than the industry average – close to 90%, compared with an average on the mid 60s.

Where Next?

After passing your Practitioner examination you may wish to implement PRINCE2 into your place of work and/or progress towards becoming a PRINCE2 Consultant.
