ITIL Foundation

The Foundation qualification demonstrates broad awareness of the ITIL approach to Service Management Best Practice.  It’s the entry point for all those interested in obtaining higher level professional recognition.

The first ITIL Foundation courses and exams based on the version 3 manuals and curriculum were run in June 2007.  Version 2 courses will run in parallel until 2008 but we expect that most candidates will prefer courses based on the latest release.

The Foundation training course remains a 3 day event leading to a multiple choice exam.  While much remains very similar to version 2, there has been clear intent to make the Foundation qualification a more comprehensive overview of ITIL – possibly at the expense of some detail when it comes to specific topics.

Exams

The ITIL Foundation exam is a one hour multiple choice paper comprising 40 questions. It is closed book. Candidates need to achieve 65% (ie 26 out of 40) to obtain the Foundation Certificate.

All exam questions come from a common “bank” regardless of whether the Exam is administered by APMG, ISEB or EXIN (the 3 currently accredited Examination Institutes in Europe).  If the exam is taken as part of a course, the exam will be invigilated by the trainer but marking will be independent: results are typically available within one week though timing may vary between Exam Institutes.

Pre-Requisites

It is strongly recommended by the APMG that candidates participate in an accredited training course – though this is not mandatory.
