ITIL Certification Tracks

A new ITIL qualification structure has been launched to dovetail with the release of version 3 (v3) training.  There will be a transitional period before a more comprehensive set of higher tier certifications is introduced.  Accordingly we describe both the current (v2) and the new (v3) ITIL structures.

The ITIL v2 certification structure comprises three tiers - Foundation, Practitioner and Manager.

The Foundation level is the common starting point for the subsequent levels and specialisations. The Practitioner level can be obtained by training and examination within one of several topic areas (eg Change Management). The Manager level does not necessarily require a Practitioner qualification but it does necessitate several years' practical experience in an IT service management role.

The new ITIL v3 certification structure will ultimately have four tiers - Foundation, Intermediate, ITIL Expert and ITIL Master.  The Foundation remains the common starting point and has been redesigned to ensure a broad overview of the Service Lifecycle.  At the Intermediate level are a series of "pick and mix" modules with either a "Lifecycle" or "Capability" theme.  ITIL Expert requires success at a high level course/exam in addition to earning sufficient credits from Foundation and Intermediate exams. The ITIL Master  qualification is still under consideration but will be aimed to reflect depth of both knowledge and practical experience.

Under the new ITIL scheme, credit is given for existing v2 qualifications held - and there are "Bridge" training courses which provide linkage between v2 and v3 at both Foundation and Manager levels.
